The Otago Science Fair is compulsory for the Year 8 girls at Columba
College and girls in years 9-13 can choose to submit a project. Once
again, there was a high standard of projects from the girls with numerous
prizes awarded. Here, the focus is on two of these projects.
Anne-Sophie Pagé, a year 8 student submitted "Snail Trails". This project
was centred on whelks (sea snails) and how far they were prepared to
travel for food. Anne-Sophie was investigating the strength of their
sense of smell and her field work was carried out both on the beach and in
the University of Otago Portobello Marine Science Laboratory. She
comprehensively and methodically recorded distances that whelks travelled
over time and her thorough approach enabled Dairy NZ to award her "most
promising young scientist." Anne- Sophie also won awards from the
University of Otago Zoology department and the University of Otago Marine
Science Award.
Kim Schultz, also a year 8 student submitted "Is our ice-cream clean?" Kim
and her family spent a lot of time eating vanilla ice-cream from dairies
throughout the city while Kim collected samples and incubated them. This
project attracted much media attention as she discovered that some samples
were infected with nasty pathogens such as E.Coli and Staphylococcus
Aureus. These microbes highlighted the importance of human hygiene in
dairies when making ice-creams for its customers. For her efforts, Kim was
awarded the following prizes; NZ Institute of Food and Science, an Aurora
Award and Otago Medical Research Foundation award.
The Otago Daily Times featured two articles about this project:
Both girls demonstrated skills of independence and initiative in
completing their projects. They showed a sound understanding of the
principles of scientific testing and as a result, were well rewarded for
their efforts.

As part of of English programme this year, the Intermediate Department
created mask characters.
The Year 8's were studying Myths & Legends from around the world and chose
a character from one of them to create into a mask. The girls had to
research their character and from what they found out, use it as a basis
for the mask. After that, they had poetic licence to fill in what was not
told - which was a lot of fun. There was a wide range of characters
created from Greek Myths to Chinese, Indian, Egyptian and Russian folk
heroes.
The Year 7's were studying Fairy Tales and chose three tales to represent
in mask form. These were The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood and
Jack and the Beanstalk. The girls devised some amazing ideas to make the
pig snouts and the wolf faces and some of the characters looked as if they
had stepped out of a Fairy Tale book!
To display the masks the girls paraded them at a school assembly during
Book Week and then they were put up on the wall for everyone to enjoy at
their leisure.

Here are a variety of sculptural artworks created by a Year 10 art class. The students were influenced by the environmental installation artist Christo. The students’ work involved wrapping a ready made object from
their own environment. The purpose of their art is simply to make an
ordinary everyday object into something visually special - creating new
ways of seeing familiar objects. The students were inspired by this unit
and they displayed the final works in the school library. The artwork was
also displayed as part of the Dunedin Rhododendron Festival week ‘Art in
the Garden’ event at Glenfalloch. It was great to hear such positive
feedback and interest in the work at this event.

For the second year running a Chamber Group with Columba students has won the Otago Chamber Music Competition. This is a very significant achievement with fifty ensembles involving 167 students taking part. The winning group was Trio Boulanger consisting of Asayo Takada, piano, and Nanae Sato, cello, from Columba College and Natasha Dwan, flute from Logan Park High School. They played a challenging modern piece, Trio for Flute, Violoncello and Piano Mvts. 1, 3 and 4 by American Composer, Ned Rorem.
The Otago Chamber Music Competition was held over the weekend of the 14th and 15th, June 2008.

The Dresden Trio with Annabel Drummond, violin, Anne-Sophie Shogimen, piano, from Columba College and Dominic Shogimen, cello, from Otago Boys' High School was awarded the Adjudicator's Award for an outstanding performance at the Otago Chamber Music Competition. The Dresden Trio performed Piano Trio No. 2 in F major Opus 80 3rd movement by Schumann.
The Otago Chamber Music Competition was held over the weekend of the 14th and 15th June, 2008.

Want to go to the Movies?
December 2007
Year 12 Design students were asked to produce promotional materials for a movie film for their NCEA Achievement Standard 90235. The film is their own invention, and the promotional materials adhere to and reflect the identified conventions of their choice of film genre (e.g. Horror, Romance, Sci-Fi etc.) These posters are the final product amongst other promotional materials which included flyers, foyer stands, CD soundtrack covers and DVD covers.

Emirembe and the Saxophone
December 2007

Year 9 Economics classes were asked to produce a book for Years 1-3 to encourage the young children to read. Each book had to have simple language with a little moral to the story. This is one of the best examples from the class and one little children would love.

Mount Aspiring National Park Project
September 2007

During a social studies unit of work, Forests and National Parks, students
were given the task of finding out about a New Zealand National Park of
their choice. Information was to be presented in the form of an A4
booklet under the headings:
Important Natural Features (e.g.rivers, mountains, lakes)
Plant life (Flora)
Animal Life (Fauna)
Activities available in the park
Problems faced by the park
Illustrations were to include examples of their own art work.

This is a variety of artworks from the 2006 Year 12 art students. This work represents a range of painting ideas and compositions which used a botanical theme and integrated other associated subject matter into the final artworks. This work is a sample of the Achievement Standard 2.3. It involved using drawing as the central means to generate and develop ideas. When creating these works the students used a systematic approach to generate and develop ideas using processes, procedures, materials and techniques from a range of studied artist models. In May the artwork was exhibited at the Dunedin Botanical Gardens Information Centre. It received a lot of interest and good comments from the public.

A Midsummer Night's Dream Poetry
June 2007
The aim of this assignment was for each student to gain an understanding
and familiarity with 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' by William Shakespeare.
The work set comprised of artistic interpretation of the play and its
characters, answering close reading questions and studying recurring
symbols, such as 'eyes' and 'sleep'. One particular task was to explore
the feelings and emotions of a character and their individual situation.
The play offered a wealth of opportunities for the girls to express
themselves in a sonnet or poem. Ideas such as 'unrequited love' of one
character for another or obeying a parent's wishes were discussed and many
students excelled themselves with their creative writing and imaginative
flair. These poems are a small representation of the excellent work which
was completed by Year 9 English.

2007 Freemasons Big Science Adventures
June 2007
Three Columba College Year 11 students (Harriet McDonald, Gemma Lindsay
and Melissa Buckingham) created a 5-minute digital video entitled "Sun +
Wind = Power" to enter into the 2007 Freemasons Big Science Adventures DVD
Competion. The nationwide DVD competition is for Year 11 to 13 students
with this year's theme focussing on climate and energy. The video created
by Harriet, Gemma and Melissa is a "News Show Documentary" showcasing a
local home on the Otago Peninsula which was built to be self-sustaining
with regard to energy. The video production involved research, script
writing, filming, acting and editing and was a huge but rewarding project
for the students.

An iceberg off the coast of Dunedin
November 2006

The icebergs which appeared off the Otago coast during November, 2006 created great interest in the Intermediate Department.
Christina Gray in Year 8 was very fortunate to experience a helicopter flight to view them. The following breath-taking photos were taken by Christina as a record of her flight. Thank you, Christina, for sharing them with the Intermediate Department.

Close to the Skin
September 2006
A poem by Chloe Anson - Year 7.
During Term Three of 2006, a small group of Years 5 to 8 students attended weekly
Creative Writing extension classes. Their tutor was well-known author and
Writer-in-Residence from the Dunedin College of Education, Tania Roxborogh. A
lovely anthology of work was produced, an example being the poem 'Close to the Skin' by Chloe
Anson, a Year 7 student.

John Toomer - Contemporary Realism Artist
November 2006
A website by Sophie Toomer - Year 13.
For the final assessment in Year 13 Computing, students were to create an
interactive website. Sophie Toomer elected to create a website to showcase her
father's artwork, allowing users to browse an on-line gallery of his paintings
and contact him if they would like further information. The final result was a
well-designed website both technically and aesthetically.

By Columba College Year 8 students.
Year 8 was fortunate to be given masks to trial by a company that produces them, so mask-making was incorporated into our English programme. The students created a character description and then translated it into a mask.
A huge variety of characters emerged, ranging from animals to fairies and pirates to princesses. The girls greatly enjoyed the experience of being able to link their written work to a visual representation of their ideas. The masks on display generated great interest from all the students.
